Local Hair Stylists Compete in Annual Hairstyling Competition and Show
Stylists from local area BUBBLES and Salon Cielo salons demonstrated their
talent, creativity and skill in both individual and salon categories during this year's 'Hair Wars'
At the 13th annual Hair Wars competition, held Sunday, September 30, more than 70 Stylists
from nearly 20 local BUBBLES and Salon Cielo salons battled for top honors in a day-long
showcase of hairstyling and pageantry.
Individual entries were judged on overall look in three different categories:
trendy, wearable day looks; runway-worthy evening looks; and outrageous fantasy
looks that pushed the limits of the imagination. Jamie Sugg, a Stylist with the BUBBLES
salon in Annapolis, won first place for her asymmetrical day look, and Erica Ritchie,
a Stylist with the BUBBLES salon at Arundel Mills, won first place for her stunning
evening look. First place in the fantasy category was awarded to So Gordan for her

Using the same theme, Stylists in the same salon created coordinating looks
to present in the salon competition, an all-out stage presentation featuring costumes,
makeup, music, choreography – and of course, fabulous hair. Themes this year
ranged from a stylized Wizard of Oz to a tribute to the cultures of the world to a
Candy Land celebration, all with the hottest music and the fiercest runway walks.
The BUBBLES salon in Annapolis was awarded first place in the salon competition for its edgy,
anti-establishment presentation featuring towering upstyles and razor-sharp cuts.
In the team competition, first place winners receive $1,000; second place is awarded $500;
and third place receives $250.
"This was one of the best Hair Wars competitions we've ever had.
The skill and creativity our Stylists showed is remarkable,"
said Ann Ratner, President of the BUBBLES and Salon Cielo salon chains and a licensed Stylist.
"I am so proud of all of them. It takes a lot of courage to compete on stage like
this, and they all did a fantastic job."
The winners are determined by a team of judges, comprised of local salon owners and
world-class educators from Wella International. Winners receive a trophy to mark their
accomplishment and the well-earned recognition of professionals in their industry.
This year, Hair Wars also held a raffle to raise money for Hairdressers Unlocking Hope,
a charitable campaign created by industry icon Vidal Sassoon, aimed at building homes
for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The raffle raised nearly $2,000 for
Habitat for Humanity and its efforts to rebuild the Gulf Coast.
